If you’re a federal employee or retiring service member, your Thrift Savings Plan is likely one of your biggest assets. Deciding whether to keep it, take withdrawals, or roll some or all of it over is a big decision. This page collects our TSP guides in one place, plus a free checklist to walk through before you move any money.

Free download: The TSP Rollover Checklist

Enter your name and email and the checklist opens right away. It’s a two-page checklist covering what you have, what you could give up by leaving the TSP, how to roll over the right way, and the questions to ask before buying an annuity.

The honest starting point

The TSP has very low costs and the G Fund can’t lose principal, so leaving isn’t right for everyone. A rollover can make sense when you want something the TSP doesn’t offer, such as a guaranteed lifetime income stream or a multi-year locked-in rate. Many people move only part of their balance and keep the rest in the TSP.
